The Molecules Involved
The most common form of phosphorus in the phosphorus cycle is phosphates. A phosphate is formed when a molecule containing phosphorus reacts with a molecule containing oxygen. Phosphates are present in nearly all of the stages of the phosphorus cycle since they are the form of phosphorus in oceans, lakes, rivers, soil, plants, and animals.
